Therapy can be scary and intimidating. Telling a stranger your problems can be uncomfortable for many people. I have been to therapy at certain times in my life and know what it’s like to feel uneasy talking to new people about your struggles. I was forced into therapy when I was 12 years old after my parents separated. Even though it took multiple weeks of my refusing to speak to my therapist, I eventually opened up, and was able to process my emotions in a way that was so helpful it forever changed by perspective towards therapy. I went back to therapy when I was 21 years old, a year after my father passed away due to complications from cancer after a life long battle with alcoholism. Going to therapy helped me process my grief and feel more at peace with my father’s death and guided the trajectory of my career.
After this experience, I realized I wanted to become a therapist as well, guiding clients through recovery from addiction and mental health issues and processing life struggles. I utilize many techniques in my therapy while leaning most heavily on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing (MI), and all of my sessions utilize a warm person centered approach. I believe the most important aspect of therapy is the therapeutic relationship, therefore I meet clients where they are and provide a nonjudgmental space to build trust. This helps clients feel comfortable opening up in order to collaboratively work through issues and meet goals.
In my free time, I enjoy gathering with friends and family and singing at church. In the warmer months, you will find me outdoors near water with a good book; in the colder months, you will find me hibernating inside with a good movie and hot cocoa. I also enjoy spending quality time with my husband, two sons, and two dogs.
